Some say that gluten-free makeup is not necessary for those with celiac because the negative effects of gluten on the body only come about as a result of ingesting gluten–not topical contact. However, we are still learning about celiac disease. What one study concludes this year might be disproved next year. We’re still discovering the differences between non-celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. What we put on our skin, we absorb into our bodies. Plus, when is the last time you wore lipstick and didn’t wind up accidentally tasting some? Wouldn’t it be better to play it safe, and assume that gluten in makeup could have a negative effect on the gluten-intolerant until we know more about it?
Personally, I wear gluten-free eyeshadow because when I don’t I get dry, scaly patches of skin on my eyelids. Whether this is due to celiac, NCGS, or something totally unrelated to gluten, I may not know for some time until researchers have studied the relationship between celiac and contact dermatitis at length. But in the meantime, I’m going to listen to my body and use the eyeshadow that agrees with my skin.
